What the heck is a personal brand and why should you even care about it? I’m going to provide you 3 reasons why you should be building your personal brand and explain why it’s simply the best online business model as the internet becomes more and more crowded.
If you’re new to the idea of personal branding, you’re not alone. Personal branding is a topic that sounds as stale and 5-month-old cereal that hasn’t been sealed. We are going to throw away that concept and make it sexy again though. So, first things first, let’s highlight what personal branding is and why this is a key element for online businesses.
In short, personal branding is marketing yourself as the brand. That’s right, YOU are the authoritative source, the service, the icon, and the legend.
It’s not a new concept, but rather an evolving one. Years ago, you could provide services almost anonymously because the internet wasn’t as crowded as it is today. You didn’t need to do much to gain customers trust. Social media wasn’t even a thing and search engines were still battling it out to get the most traffic through their platform.
Oh, how things have now changed. Let me put it to you this way. In the year 2000, there’s no way in heck you could have been able to post selfies on social media and have shoe companies reach out to you with endorsement deals. Today, it happens all the time. Creating a blog, talking about what mattered to you and getting paid for it was a foreign concept that was clear as mud. Now, you can find blogs on almost every topic. The internet is leveling the playing field. People are wising up and realizing what a gold mine personal branding is.
The online world continues to transform at an incredibly fast rate. This is why personal branding is becoming more and more popular.
Side note: Even if the idea of starting an online business isn’t your cup of tea, keep in mind that more and more employers are looking for social proof of who they are hiring. LinkedIn (a social network for professionals) has over 500 million active users on that platform. Having an online personal brand can give you the extra edge over your competition. For that reason alone, I highly recommend building a personal brand.
So exactly why does personal branding actually matter? When you add a personality to your brand, this creates another layer of depth that separates your business from all the competition.
Because we are living in such a digital era, personal branding has become increasingly more important as the online market becomes flooded. It feels like almost everyone has something to sell, a service to offer, and something to promote! So why should someone purchase what YOU have to offer or look into a service that YOU provide? It comes down to two words, Personal Brand.
Here are the three reasons why personal branding is the best online business model:
- No one can be you.
- You can do what you love.
- You can create multiple income streams.
Now comes the part where we look further into how personal branding can be the pivotal element to your online business and what makes it such a powerful online business model.
1. No One Can Be You
The number one reason why personal branding is a solid foundation to build an online business on is that no one can replicate YOU. People don’t understand why this is important though.
You’ve probably heard that cheeky quote, “You can copy me, but you’ll never be me.”
Let me be blunt with you. That tingly feeling you get when you think of a new business idea isn’t something new. Someone has either thought of that idea before you did or may even be executing on it right now as you’re reading this.
Before you get your panties in a bunch, here’s what I want you to get out of this section. While others may have the same ideas and tools, NO ONE has your story. Your story, experiences, and genetic make-up is unique to you as an individual so use that to your advantage.
Tips to separates yourself:
- Include your story as much as possible when appropriate.
- Share your experiences within your personal brand.
- Use your DNA to your advantage. (If you’re pretty, then use your prettiness – you get the point)
- If you dress a certain style, speak a certain way, or do things that are unique to you, then keep doing that!
When it comes to building an online business, remember that being different is better than being better. No one is better at being different than you. 😊
2. You Can Do What You Love and Love What You Do
Another benefit of using a personal brand to design your online business model is you can turn your hobby, passion, or interests into a full-time income.
Too many people take on certain job titles just because it “pays the bills” and puts food on the table.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen that mindset used to create new businesses too and they usually fail. Running an online business isn’t easy. In fact, I’ll go further and say it’s not for everyone. That said, why try and build a business you’re genuinely not passionate about? You would just be setting yourself up for failure.
Personal branding alleviates this problem by allowing you to do what you enjoy.

3. Multiple Stream of Income Is Actually a Thing
If you work a 9-5 job, you’re probably used to the idea of just having one income stream. Personally, I always advise individuals to have at least two income streams even if the second stream is just supplemental income.
When it comes to personal branding, this business model allows you to diversify your income stream much more easily. Because you are the brand behind your online business, you can leverage various methods at the same time to make an income.
A bulk of your income may come from digital and physical products. That said, it’s not the only source of income that personal branding gives you access to. A few other great ways to make money online can be from speaking at events, podcasts, brand deals, consulting, and also affiliate commission from recommending great products.
Having multiple streams of income greatly reduces the risk incurred upon your online business. You know if one stream of income fails, you won’t be left in the lurch scrambling desperately to make ends meet. Your other income sources can support and give you peace of mind until you can methodically plan out your next move.
I can ramble on and on about the many benefits of building a personal brand.
My goal here was to keep it short, simple and to the point. Whether you’re working a corporate full-time job, freelancing, or anything in between, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be building a personal brand.
